Did You Know Scientists Have Invented 100% Biodegradable Plastic? It’s Made Of THIS Kitchen Ingredient!

Plastic pollution is the most concerning problem that continues to plague the earth. From microplastics being found in human beings’ blood to plastic wrappers choking the Earth’s fauna, it is high time we find a solution to this menace. Interestingly, scientists have invented a 100 per cent biodegradable plastic. The best part? This material is made from a kitchen ingredient. Read on to know more!

Copenhagen Researchers Invent 100% Biodegradable Plastic Made Of Barley

Researchers and scientists at the University of Copenhagen, have invented a potential replacement for plastic. A team of researchers from the University’s Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences threw more light on this newly invented biocomposite material. To make this biodegradable plastic, scientists have used barley. Barley starch and fibre from sugarbeet waste are blended together.

Prototypes Like Bags & Bottles To Come Up Soon

As per a report by the University of Copenhagen Professor Andreas Blennow threw more light on this matter. He stated that recycling seems incapable of solving the enormous problem of plastic waste. Therefore, the team of researchers developed a new bioplastic that is stronger and can withstand water better than the current bioplastics. Also, he assured people that the new material is 100% biodegradable and can be easily converted into compost.

Ingredients like cellulose and amylose commonly found across the plant kingdom go into making it. You can find amylose in crops like barley, wheat, potatoes and corn. While local industry sugar waste goes into making cellulose. The researchers are already collaborating with two Danish packaging companies to make prototypes. From trays, and bottles to bags, these 100 per cent biodegradable products made of barley will hit the markets.
