Diwali is just around the corner, and Indians are ready to do their annual festive shopping but this time with caution. In a recent survey, about 65% of respondents said that they would prefer online shopping over physical shopping in stores. The respondents also said that they would shop from local weavers and artisans to support small businesses and the Prime Minister’s cause of making India self-reliant.

Indian Consumers Want The Local Vendors To Go Online
In an attempt to oppose Chinese manufacturers, many states have banned the sale of Chinese crackers. This year, Indians are not buying lights and decorations from China. Indian consumers want to shop from local vendors, especially the neighbourhood Kirana shops. However, consumers said they would prefer the local shops to go online for safety purposes. Many local vendors have, yet, been listing themselves on e-commerce sites like Amazon India and Flipkart. If the kirana stores go online, respondents said that they could buy bakery items, Indian sweets and gift boxes from them. Urban India Would Spend Less Money As Compared To Other Years
After months of lockdown, the government has been looking forward to the festive season with a hope that it would revive the economy as spending increases. But most urban Indians said in the survey that they would spend less money this year as compared to the other years. But despite the low spending behaviour, the survey revealed that Indians would spend on categories like gadgets, clothes, appliances and fashion accessories. On the contrary, For big purchases such as jewellery and furniture, 61% and 55% of Indians said they would prefer buying these from offline stores.
