Diwali is one of the most joyous times for all of us! Brightly lit markets, decked-up homes, and a happy vibe all around. But, that’s not the case for everyone. Our little furry friends are often distressed during the festive season because of harsh lights and exposure to harmful substances. Diwali is almost here and while we are all decorating our homes with bright and vibrant lights and even bursting crackers, we are forgetting how our happy celebrations can be affecting the animals around us. We often miss out on the fact that animals are very sensitive to their surroundings.

According to an India Today report, loud noises, harsh lights, crowds, and exposure to toxins can create a distressing environment for pets and stray animals. They don’t just make animals uncomfortable but also have potential health risks for them.

Here’s How You Can Make Diwali Happy For The Animals

So, how can you help make Diwali safe and happy for animals? Well, you can follow these tips, suggested by The Animal Care Organization (TACO), and have a great festive season for everyone –

1. Provide comfort to the animals. Minimise noise and try offering them shelter.
2. Protect their ears and paws. According to India Today, noise and pollutants from crackers can be very harmful to your pets. So, clean their paws, furs, and eyes. Also, make them wear pet earmuffs to protect their ears from loud noises.
3. Keep diyas and candles at a place where your pets are not able to reach.
4. Opt for early morning or late night walks for your pets during Diwali to minimise harmful exposure.
5. Avoid bursting crackers, it’s safe for the environment and the animals!
6. Light up your homes with LED lights instead of hard fluorescent ones.
7. Avoid sky lanterns near trees and open spaces as it can harm the birds.
