Major construction projects are ongoing at different stations on the Delhi Metro Line. One of the most recent significant projects is a tunnel between Chhatarpur and Chhatarpur Mandir stations on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor. Measuring 865 metres in length, this tunnel’s construction concluded on August 21, 2024. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) marked a remarkable breakthrough with the completion of this tunnel.

DMRC Finished Tunnel Construction Between Chhatarpur & Chhatarpur Mandir Stations

Taking to X, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (@OfficialDMRC) shared pictures of the Tunnel Boring Machine’s breakthrough at the Chhatarpur Mandir site.

DMRC finished the entire process of boring through this underground tunnel on Wednesday. It is a noteworthy construction on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor of the Delhi metro. The metro corridor (23.62 km Golden Line) is presently under construction. DMRC shared the news of tunnel work and called it a breakthrough at Chhatarpur Mandir Station. According to a report by Hindustan Times, a Tunnel Boring Machine broke through an underground section close to the Chhatarpur temple.

On Wednesday morning, the machine broke through at Chhatarpur Mandir Station after boring the 865-metre tunnel using a 97-metre Tunnel Boring Machine. Besides, two parallel circular tunnels are under construction as a part of the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor. Its primary reason is to facilitate up and down movement. The project of the other parallel tunnel in this section will be wrapped up by September 2024.

Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot and Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Vinai Kumar Saxena witnessed the breakthrough of the Tunnel Boring Machine at the Chhatarpur Mandir site. Also, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Principal Secretary to LG Ashish Kundra, MoHUA OSD (UT) Jaideep, and senior officials were present here.

  • This all-new tunnel on the Delhi Metro has been developed at an average depth of about 15 metres.
  • Also, there are around 618 rings in the tunnel. Each comes with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres.
  • Earth Pressure Balancing Method technology played a crucial role in the tunnel construction.
  • In addition to the technology, a concrete lining made of precast tunnel rings was used too.
