Dubai is synonymous with everything fancy, grand and opulent- however, it is also synonymous with abras. When in Dubai, taking an abra ride for AED 1 is a must on every traveller’s list. And now guess what? The classic Dubai Abras are getting a swanky upgrade. Yep, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the city’s wooden abras are set to get a modern touch.
Dubai Abra To Retain Original Shape But Get An All New-Design
Dubai Abra’s are getting cooler, and we are super pumped about it. The traditional abras will retain their original shape but will have an all-new design that meets security, safety and environmental standards. The upgrade of the abras is a part of the RTA’s strategic plan to upgrade marine transport services.
The RTA furthermore announced that new lines would be operational along Dubai Creek, the coastal strip along Jumeriah and the Dubai water canal. On this, RTA’s Director of Marine Transport, Mohammed Abu Baker Al Hashemi, said,
“Operating the new abras is part of a master plan developed by the RTA to overhaul Dubai’s marine transport systems, which serve about 14 million riders per year. The RTA plans to increase the number of marine transport stations to 59 stations by 2025 and manufacture 26 marine transport modes.”
The Newly Designed Abra Will Accommodate 20 Passengers In One Go
He further added,
“It also plans to open new lines on Dubai Creek and the coastal strip along the Jumeirah beaches as well as new lines to serve the islands and the Dubai Water Canal.”
In terms of design, the new abras will be made using African teak wood and will measure 35 in length, 10.5 feet in width. They’ll be able to accommodate up to 20 passengers in one go. The Abras will also have smart transportation systems, GPS, cameras, advanced onboard sound and lighting, two slots for wheelchairs, and more.
Well, Dubai Abra’s have always been special, and we are so looking forward to this new upgrade.
