This year, the Powai Pujo is all set to captivate the hearts of devotees and visitors. The pujo has a unique theme that pays homage to the city it calls home—Mumbai. The organisers are celebrating Mumbai’s rich history, iconic landmarks, and the indomitable spirit of inclusivity that the metropolis is known for.

Powai Bengali Welfare Association’s Pujo


The Durga Puja is held and organised by the Powai Bengali Welfare Association. In this year’s pujo, Mumbai’s essence comes alive through intricate replicas of the Gateway of India, the signature black-and-yellow Kali Peeli taxis, and the beloved double-decker buses that navigate its bustling streets. More than just a visual spectacle, this Pujo embraces diversity. LGBTQIA+ community will play a key role in its cherished traditions like debi boron and sindoor khela. This showcases the city’s ever-growing commitment to inclusivity. Mumbai is known as a melting pot of cultures, and this year’s Powai Pujo echoes that sentiment.

Durga Pujo is being reimagined at Powai to reflect modern values of equality and acceptance. In a city as diverse as Mumbai, the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ members in such cultural rituals marks a moment of social progress.

The Powai Bengali Welfare Association (PBWA) is a registered charitable organisation. It was established in 2006 by a group of enthusiastic Powai residents. United by a shared commitment to improving their local community, they also aimed to foster cultural and social harmony on a broader scale.

A Historic Puja


For Bengalis and those with ties to Kolkata or Bengal, Durga Puja is far more than a religious celebration—it’s an emotion. In 2006, PBWA hosted its first Durga Puja, or Sarvajanin Durgotsav. It offered the Bengali community in Mumbai a chance to relive and recreate these cherished traditions. Held annually at Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, the Times Powai Sarvajanin Durgotsav has become a major highlight on Mumbai’s Durga Puja circuit. Over the past 15 years, it has drawn thousands of visitors daily.  Since its inception, PBWA has been actively involved in various social causes  Moreover, it has offered support to numerous charitable organisations from its very first year.

From the vibrant pandal design to the inclusive participation of diverse communities, this year’s Powai Pujo offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity.
