Egypt’s PM Fast-Tracks Housing Plan To Replace Alexandria’s Unsafe Buildings With 60,000 New Homes

Egypt is setting the groundwork for one of its biggest housing upgrades in Alexandria. The government has approved the construction of 60,000 new homes to replace buildings currently marked as unsafe. Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly has told the Ministry of Housing to get things moving fast. Local authorities will now team up with the ministry to sort out land, finalise plans, and kick off construction. The aim is simple: get people out of unsafe buildings and into homes they can actually feel secure in.

Authorities have already completed a full survey of properties across Alexandria. The buildings flagged in this list are structurally unsound and pose real risks to the people living in them. Instead of spending resources patching them up, the government is going straight to reconstruction. These families won’t be left waiting for things to fall apart. They’ll be moved into proper homes built to modern safety standards.

Unsafe Buildings To Be Replaced, Not Repaired

This isn’t a surface-level fix. This isn’t just about concrete and planning permits. It’s part of a bigger mission to give Alexandria a proper upgrade. The city’s changing, and this project could improve how thousands of people live every single day.

A Citywide Upgrade Beyond Housing

During a recent review visit, the Alexandria Governorate shared the latest updates on ongoing projects. The total investment now sits at EGP 90.5 billion (USD 1.89 billion). A big slice of that is going into transport improvements. There’s active work on the Corniche road, progress on the Abu Qir Metro, and upgrades to the Raml Tram. Authorities have also been directed to start converting 200 public buses to natural gas, making the city more sustainable.

At the same time, the city is keeping an eye on what makes Alexandria special. Ahead of summer 2025, the city is making its beaches clean, upgrading public spots, and making sure key areas actually look different. What stands out here is the no-delay approach. The Prime Minister’s orders are firm. Land must be allocated now. Construction must begin immediately. People living in risk zones won’t be left in limbo.
