Elderly People Set Up Free Library On Mumbai Footpath To Promote Reading

Bibliophiles! Mumbai has a 24×7 free library on a footpath in Mulund east. Started by social workers, this library nestled at Khandoba Mandir Chowk boasts a collection of over 2000 books. Donated by senior citizens these books cover a wide array of subjects ranging from fiction, autobiographies, self-help, competitive exam books and more. This 24×7 Footpath Library In Mulund East Has Over 2000 Books

According to The Indian Express, Ramesh Meshram, a senior citizen first thought of this idea as a space where the elderly could come together to read or take home a book as a good time-pass. He revealed to The Indian Express that at a time when everyone is hooked on their phones, this is a good way to promote reading. Students from the nearby Kelkar college also pick up books from this innovative 24×7 open library that remains unguarded. The library is located at a spot that’s surrounded by greenery with minimal vehicular traffic.

Senior Citizens Renowned In Their Fields Donated Books To This Free Open Library

Some of the people who donated books to this library are retired assistant police commissioner, Jaywant Hargude, mechanical engineer, Sadanand Desai and businesswoman, Jayshree Bise to name a few. Desai revealed to The Indian Express that he and his late wife loved reading and collecting books. After his wife passed away, Desi donated over 500 books to this footpath library. This 24×7 library in Mulund east is a wonderful stop for bibliophiles, who can read out in the open and enjoy a different experience.
