Starting July 1st, Indian Railways will implement a marginal fare hike across long-distance and premium train services. This marks the first increase in passenger fares since January 2020, following a nearly five-year freeze. The hike will affect several classes, including AC and Mail/Express trains, while suburban and short-distance second-class journeys remain exempt. This decision aligns with the railway ministry’s plan to balance operational costs without overburdening daily commuters. The move also supports ongoing investments in railway modernisation. Passengers are advised to check revised fares before booking future journeys.
Indian Railways AC And Express Fares To Rise By 1-2 Paise Per Kilometre
Indian Railways has proposed a minimal increase in train fares, which will be applicable from the beginning of July 2025. As reported by The Hindu, passengers travelling by AC classes such as Chair Car, 3AC, 2AC, and 1AC will now pay 2 paise more per kilometre. Meanwhile, fares for Mail and Express trains in non-AC classes will increase by 1 paise per kilometre. This modest rise is expected to add only ₹5–₹25 to most long-distance journeys, depending on the class and distance.
Suburban And Season Ticket Holders Remain Unaffected
The fare revision will not affect suburban services or passengers holding Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs). According to The Hindu, the railway ministry intends to shield daily commuters from this increase, ensuring that those who rely on trains for local travel do not bear any extra burden. Moreover, passengers in ordinary second-class travelling distances under 500 km will not see any fare change.

First Fare Hike Since 2020 Targets Long-Distance Operations
This is Indian Railways’ first fare revision since January 2020. The price update comes at a time when the ministry faces rising fuel and maintenance costs, alongside investments in modernisation. While the changes are nominal, they reflect an effort to improve service sustainability without making fares unaffordable. The fare hike has been kept deliberately low to minimise the impact on passengers, especially in lower-income segments.
