First Look Of Tiruchi International Airport’s New Passenger Terminal Unveiled; Here’s All You Need To Know

Tiruchi International Airport has completed its infrastructure development project, marking a significant step forward in passenger capacity, energy efficiency, and overall travel experience. The new passenger terminal is now open.

Tiruchi Airport Unveils New Passenger Terminal

Egis, a leading international firm specialising in consulting, construction engineering, and mobility, played a crucial role as the Design and Project Management Consultant for the airport and its surrounding infrastructure. The impressive new integrated passenger terminal building spans a vast 75,000 square metres and boasts a commendable 4-star Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA). This signifies the building’s commitment to sustainability alongside its cutting-edge facilities designed to accommodate 4.5 million passengers annually.

Tiruchi’s new terminal can handle 3,480 passengers (2,400 international and 1,080 domestic) during peak hours. It has two levels, with arrivals on the ground floor and departures upstairs. The design incorporates geometric shapes and reflects local culture, particularly temple architecture. The terminal’s main ground floor entrance is modelled after Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple’s rajagopuram in Srirangam. Passengers can expect modern amenities for a more enjoyable travel experience.

The design incorporates unique local touches, with a parametric and curved roof reminiscent of the “gopuram” architectural style found in temples. The roof’s colourful cladding, made from ornamental zinc titanium, further echoes this regional influence. The passenger lounges and artwork seamlessly integrate elements of temple architecture, traditions, and cultural sensibilities.

For an aesthetically pleasing interior, the design incorporates multi-coloured false ceilings, while the flooring patterns mimic the traditional kolam patterns, a welcoming symbol in Indian culture. Egis successfully delivered the Tiruchi International Airport project in January this year, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself inaugurating the new integrated passenger terminal building.

Sandeep Gulati, Egis’s Managing Director for South Asia, expressed his pride in the accomplishment, stating that it highlights their dedication to excellence and innovation within the aviation infrastructure domain. He extended gratitude to all stakeholders and contributors for their invaluable support in reaching these significant milestones.
