One of the most prominent locations of New York has made a statement. The Central Park in New York has been home to 23 statues representing achievements of various men who have left their mark in the history. Not even a single statue of a woman could find its place in the 840 acre park. Until now.
A city commission recently voted to erect a monument that depicts three prominent women who were instrumental in the fight for women’s rights: Susan B Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth.

‘This statue conveys the power of women working together to bring about revolutionary change in our society,’ said Pam Elam, president of the Monumental Women nonprofit of volunteer advocates, historians and community leaders, with key support from Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer. The organisation’s statue fund privately raised $1.5 million to create and maintain the new monument and for an associated educational program, reported the Associated Press.

The statue has been created by artist Meredith Bergmann, and some are saying that ‘it will break the bronze-ceiling in the 166-yr-old park’. The Central Park is home to bronze statues of Sir Walter Scott, Alexander Hamilton, William Shakespeare and Christopher Columbus.
The creator, Bergmann, was reported as saying, ‘My hope is that all people, but especially young people, will be inspired by this image of women of different races, different religious backgrounds and different economic status working together to change the world.’
The bronze statue wis expected to be installed at Central Park in August 2020. It will be positioned in an elegant promenade that has been lined with American elm trees. What will make this installation even more prominent is the fact that next year, will also mark 100 years since American women won the right to vote. There couldn’t have been a better moment than this to commemorate the role of women in the history of the United States of America.
