Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is a wetland where you can find tens of thousands of birds and around 500 greater flamingos during the winter season.

What Is It? 

Just a few kilometres away from the bustling city of Dubai is a wetland reserve called Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary where you’ll find tens of thousands of birds in a spot so close to the city. It is renowned for attracting migratory birds in large numbers. The sanctuary is closely monitored and protected by the Dubai Municipality and is called as the ‘Cape of the Creek,’ The reserve also acts as a breeding ground and home each year for crustaceans, mammals and fish, but hold one, what actually steals the show is the beautiful flamingos that migrate here during the winter season. If you look close enough then you can also spot grey herons, great egrets, reef herons, cormorants, black-winged stilts, sandpipers, osprey and much much more.

What’s In It? 

Ras Al Khor is home to about 500 greater flamingos, which has become something of a mascot for Dubai’s Wild Life protection program. Presently there are three birding hides located on the perimeter of the sanctuary open to the public. Entrance is free and operates from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday to Thursday. The sanctuary is spread across 6km which features mangroves, lagoons, salt flats and much more.
