Following heavy rainfall, the US states of New York and New Jersey faced an emergency flood conditions at the start of the week. This severe weather condition in the two major states prompted residents to remain on high alert and evacuate basement apartments. On July 14, Monday, due to intense rainfall in parts of both states, the government issued an advisory urging residents to stay indoors and avoid travel. Read on for more details.

Flash Floods In New York And New Jersey

Torrential rain triggered flash floods in New York and New Jersey, causing people to evacuate their basement apartments. They were advised to stay in a safe place by the authorities. The severe weather condition led to submerged roads and caused several flight delays and cancellation. In this emergency, basement apartments were advised to be evacuated as they are particularly vulnerable.

Taking to his X (Twitter) account, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, “I am declaring a State of Emergency given flash flooding and high levels of rainfall in parts of the state. Please stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Stay safe, New Jersey.” 

Also, the New York Emergency Management gave the latest update saying,” The heaviest rainfall has shifted east and weakened. This rain is expected to continue to move east and lessen in intensity through the night. Please make sure to heed any road closures as there remains residual flooding for portions of NE NJ, the LHV, and NYC.”

Rainfall Report Of Affected Areas

More than an inch of rain had already affected Staten Island and Manhattan by Monday evening. An alert was issued warning that conditions could intensify overnight. According to NBC News, the rainfall report in Staten Island was 1.67 inches, which increased to between 4-6 inches by Tuesday. On Manhattan’s west side, rainfall measured 1.47 inches on Monday. So far, no rain-related injuries or fatalities have been reported.

The officials in New York and New Jersey are on high alert. They are keeping a close eye on the flood-affected areas. Several reports suggest that the flood situation is not getting under control anytime soon and is expected to deteriorate further.
