Mammatus clouds are rare cloud formations that are categorised by a series of pouches or bulges that emerge from the base of another cloud. These unusual clouds usually indicate the arrival of heavy rainfall, hailstorm or lightning. They are usually in relation to thunderstorms. As Argentina’s overcast skies were covered in a blanket of Mammatus clouds, it left the locals confused. Last year, a giant mushroom-shaped cloud in Ukraine led to fears of a nuclear blast as the clouds appeared 60 miles from Chernobyl, the site of the world’s most devastating nuclear disaster in 1968.
