Buddhist monks wear simple robes and spend their days meditating, praying and studying. Most of them live in monasteries and temples and eat simple food. A content creator on Instagram, Ten Zin (@tenzin_tashi_123) from Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, recently showed his followers what is actually cooked at the Gaden Shartse Monastery in Mundgod, Karnataka, on a daily basis.
The video starts with Ten Zin explaining that they don’t eat the same food every day, but the food is cooked with lots of love and teamwork. According to the video, the cooking prep starts at 1 am – 2 am. The morning starts with hot chapatis with tea. Their chapatis are not your usual chapatis, but are bigger in size and look like pancakes.

Monks Also Eat Biryani And Fried Rice
On some days, Buddhist monks eat chapati with vegetables, while on special days, even biryani and fried rice are cooked in the kitchen. They also eat Chura Baklap, which is a favourite of many monks. It is a traditional Tibetan flatbread that is often stuffed with a special type of cheese called Chura.
But the most special thing about food in monasteries is the teamwork. While one person is cooking food, another monk is chopping vegetables. Some monks can also be seen washing utensils. Ten Zin spoke about how a plate of food here is special because a lot of hard work and teamwork goes into it.
