Located in the town of Ambaji in the Banaskantha district of Gujarat, the Ambaji Temple is one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas. And now, in a new development, its famous Mohanthal prasad, made from besan, has received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Here’s everything you need to know about this prasad and what makes it special.

Ambaji Temple’s Mohanthal Prasad Gets GI Tag

Mohanthal is a sweet prasad that is distributed to devotees at the famous Ambaji Temple in Gujarat. Made from gram flour (besan), sugar and ghee, it was recently awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognising its centuries-old recipe and deep cultural link to the temple. The GI tag was awarded on October 11, the first day of the auspicious Navratri festival.

Banaskantha Collector and managing trustee of the Trust, Mihir Patel, told Ahmedabad Mirror that the Mohanthal prasad is a symbol of devotees’ faith in the goddess and the rituals. The GI tag is a matter of pride for all of them. He also expressed his gratitude to the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

What Makes This Prasad Special?

According to the official District Banaskantha Government website, a specific traditional method of preparing Mohanthal prasad is followed. This method has been handed down through generations and refined by skilled experts. This special method of making the prasad gives it its signature mustard-yellow colour, granulated texture, and unique aroma. And not to forget, its delicious and distinctive sweet flavour.

Mohanthal prasad is made as ‘Raj Bhog’, a cherished offering prepared daily with devotion and faith at the Ambaji Temple. It is first offered to Ambaji Maa before being distributed among devotees as blessed prasad. So, if you ever visit Ambaji Temple in Gujarat, do try this special prasad.
