Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away At 80

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, passed away on August 8 at the age of 80. The veteran CPM leader took his last breath on Thursday morning, at about 8:30 AM. According to multiple reports, he breathed his last at his residence in South Kolkata’s Palm Avenue.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was suffering from respiratory issues and news of him getting hospitalised for treatments made headlines in the last couple of years. Now, he is survived by his wife Meera Bhattacharya and daughter Suchetana Bhattacharya. In the past few years, the former Chief Minister suffered from several age-related ailments.

The veteran Left leader was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata’s Alipore last year. He was rushed there about a year back in July. He suffered from pneumonia and was on ventilation as well. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee faced health concerns with lower respiratory tract infection and Type 2 respiratory failure and was admitted to Woodlands Hospital on July 29.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was the second and last CPM chief minister during the continuous rule of 34 years of the party in West Bengal. He became the Chief Minister in 2000 and was at the helm till 2011. Interestingly, he was a school teacher before stepping into the world of politics full-time.

Netizens Are Saddened Hearing The News

Ministers, politicians, and commoners are taking to social media to express their thoughts and condolences after hearing the news of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s demise.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief at the unfortunate news. “I feel very sad right now. My sincere condolences to Meera di and Suchetan in this time of bereavement,” she shared. She has known him for decades and visited him at home a few times when he was ill in the last few years.

“Salute to Comrade Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Comrade Buddhadev Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee,” the official Twitter handle of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), West Bengal State Committee shared.
