Air India’s Modernisation
A significant fleet modernisation is now underway at Air India. The airline made significant announcements about the same.
The airline’s narrowbody aircraft is currently undergoing a successful modernisation process that is expected to be finished by mid-2025. Meanwhile, the first of the legacy widebodies, a Boeing 787, will begin retrofitting with new seats and entertainment systems in April and return to service in October of the same year. A monthly induction of two to three B787s will follow until all 27 legacy aircraft have been modernised.
Due to production limitations at the chosen seat supplier, the retrofit of the old Boeing 777 fleet with new seats and entertainment systems, which was initially scheduled to begin in 2025, will now begin in early 2026. Ahead of the complete conversion effort, Air India is using the 2025 period to update as many other B777 interior components as possible.

The airline will halt its non-stop Mumbai-Melbourne service from March 30 to September 13, 2025, and its non-stop Kochi-London Gatwick route from March 30, 2025, until further notice due to the retrofit program and the resulting temporary reduction in the operational fleet. Air India will still run 12 weekly flights from Amritsar, Ahmedabad, and Goa to London Gatwick.
