One of them is Baisakhi — the festival that marks the beginning of the new year for the Sikh community! But more than that, it is the Baisakhi Mela that gets people excited.
Baisakhi Mela: The Popular Punjabi Festival
The Baisakhi mela is generally celebrated to announce the arrival of spring and harvest season. It is a three-day festival, and generally, it falls on April 14th. This festival is said to be of utmost importance for the state of Punjab.
Around this time, people are rejoicing and dancing to the beats of Punjabi dhols. You can even hear traditional Punjabi music being sung. One of the most significant aspects of the Baisakhi Mela is Nagar Kirtan which is customary in the festival. And you will cherish the memory of the Nagar Kirtan for a very long time.

People sing and dance to the beat of the dhol as the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, is carried through the parade in a decked chariot. From Giddha to Bhangra, you can witness various dance styles and won’t be able to resist joining them! And not to forget the huge spread of delicious and mouth-watering food like Dodha Barfi, Pindi Chana, Sarson ka Saag with Makke ki roti, Kheer and so on.
Importance Of 14th April
14th of April is important for the Sikh community as the Khalsa Panth was established on this date. Moreover, the date signifies their struggle against oppression and injustice. And the Baisakhi festival is celebrated all over the world on this very day!
This year, the District Administration of Kapurthala has planned to organise the Baisakhi Mela. The mela will be held on 23rd April and events will be mapped out for visitors. With vivid and vibrant colours, the fair will showcase some unique features of rural Punjab.
The main event of this mela is Bhangra and Giddha dance performances. In addition to this, there will be magic shows, games, poetry, free-style wrestling and games. The place will have food stalls serving delicious food and artisan stalls where you can buy local handicrafts.
