According to NDTV, West Bengal just earned a GI tag for the very famous Nolen Gur Sandesh. Besides this, six other items from the state received a GI tag, taking the number of items on West Bengal’s GI list to 32. GI tags are conferred on products or natural resources of a region for their proper commercial utilisation. These are awarded by the central government’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.

Nolen Gur Sandesh is a winter delicacy that is made from fresh chhena and the famous ‘nolen gur’ (date palm jaggery). This jaggery imparts a rich, almost caramel-like flavour to the sandesh and also adds a warm golden colour to it. A few years back, another traditional sweet from West Bengal called Joynagar Moya also received a GI tag. This famous sweet is also prepared with nolen gur.

Besides Nolen Gur Sandesh, Baruipur’s guavas, Kamarpukur’s ‘bonde’, Murshidabad’s ‘Chhanabora’, Bishnupur’s ‘motichoor laddoo’, Radhunipagal rice, and Malda’s Nistari silk yarn also earned a GI tag. Authorities believe this development will boost the local economy. Furthermore, it will also add to the global recognition of the state’s traditional offerings.

Federation of Association of Cottage and Small Industries in West Bengal, which works closely with MSMEs and state bodies to promote the state’s traditional products for GI recognition, said that these new additions are a great encouragement for the region.
