From Shots To Sophisticated Sips, Expert Mixologist Weighs In On Tequila’s Growing Popularity In India & How to Appreciate It

Tequila has long been celebrated for its unique flavours and rich heritage, but its growing popularity in India marks an exciting shift in the country’s drinking culture. As more Indian consumers develop a taste for premium spirits, tequila is quickly emerging as a favourite. MKT in Delhi stands at the forefront of this trend, offering an impeccable dining experience complemented by innovative cocktails that bring out the best in this versatile spirit. Recently, MKT launched their highly anticipated Tacos & Tequila nights, happening every Tuesday and Thursday. It cemented its status as a go-to spot for tequila enthusiasts.

To delve into the tequila craze and the exciting new trends, we had the pleasure of speaking with Sahil Negi, MKT’s head mixologist. His insights provided a fascinating glimpse into the world of tequila and how it’s being embraced in India.

Understanding Tequila, A Singular Spirit

When asked about the influence of different agave plants on tequila’s flavour profile, Sahil clarified a common misconception. “Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant (Agave Tequilana Weber var. Azul). This ensures a more consistent production and flavour profile across different brands,” he explained. This distinction is crucial as it sets tequila apart from mezcal, which can be made from various agave species.

Negi emphasises that the best way to appreciate good tequila is to enjoy it straight up or on the rocks. “Allow the natural flavours and complexities to shine,” he advises. While tequila-based cocktails are incredibly popular, Negi recommends sipping them slowly to savour their nuances. “Avoid slamming it back as a shot; instead, appreciate its aroma, taste, and finish,” he adds, encouraging a more thoughtful approach to enjoying this spirit.

When asked about his favourite ways to enjoy tequila, Negi shares, “My personal favourite way to enjoy tequila is in a cocktail. Tequila’s versatility makes it an excellent base for a wide variety of cocktails, from classics like the Margarita to more innovative creations that highlight its unique flavour profile.” This versatility is showcased brilliantly at MKT’s Tacos & Tequila nights, where each cocktail is crafted to perfection. He also encourages enthusiasts to experiment with different mixers and garnishes to discover new combinations.

Sustainability In Tequila Production

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the tequila industry. Negi highlights the environmental impact of traditional practices and the shift towards eco-friendly methods. “Brands like Patrón, Casa Noble, and Don Julio are leading the way by implementing sustainable practices, such as using recycled materials, conserving water, and managing agave by-products responsibly,” he explains. This commitment to sustainability not only preserves resources but also ensures the long-term viability of the industry.

Tequila Cocktails Inspired by Indian Festivals

Negi’s creativity shines when discussing a tequila cocktail inspired by a festival in India. He proposes a Picante with a twist of mango, inspired by Holi. “Mango, being a beloved fruit in India, adds a rich, sweet, and tropical flavour that pairs beautifully with the spicy notes of a Picante. This cocktail would celebrate the lively and joyful spirit of Holi while offering a refreshing and exotic twist to traditional tequila cocktails,” he elaborates. The vibrant colours and flavours of this cocktail perfectly mirror the essence of Holi. It certainly makes it an ideal drink for the festival.

Looking ahead, Negi predicts a shift from taking tequila as shots to enjoying it in well-crafted cocktails or straight up. “This change reflects a growing appreciation for the complexities and nuances of tequila, encouraging people to savour it more thoughtfully and experiment with sophisticated cocktail recipes,” he notes. This trend is already gaining traction at MKT, where patrons are discovering new and exciting ways to enjoy tequila.

He also foresees significant growth in the Indian market’s appreciation for tequila over the next five years. “As more people explore premium tequilas and innovative cocktails, tequila is poised to replace the popularity of gin,” he predicts. This shift will be driven by an increasing interest in diverse spirits and the desire for unique drinking experiences. Negi’s insights are reflected in the growing number of tequila enthusiasts flocking to MKT for their Tacos & Tequila nights.

Complementing Tequila With Indian Spices

When asked about Indian spices or herbs that complement tequila, Negi suggests coriander and rhododendron. “Coriander, with its fresh and slightly citrusy flavour, can enhance the brightness of a tequila cocktail. Rhododendron, known for its unique aroma, can add an intriguing floral note,” he explains. These ingredients can create refreshing and aromatic cocktails that highlight tequila’s versatility.

For those looking to experiment with tequila at home, Negi offers this advice: “Start with añejo or reposado tequila. These aged tequilas offer a richer and more complex flavour profile compared to blanco tequila, making them easier to appreciate on their own or in cocktails. Experiment with different mixers and garnishes to discover combinations that you enjoy, and don’t be afraid to try classic recipes as well as create your own.”

Negi’s passion for tequila and his innovative approach to mixology make MKT the ultimate destination for tequila lovers in Delhi. Explore the evolving tequila trends in India with hos expert insights and elevate your tequila experience to new heights.
