Eat more green veggies is something that we grew up listening to. No food items can replace the amount of nutrition-rich content green vegetables provide us with. From necessary vitamins to fibres to minerals, these are loaded with health benefits. However, simply consuming them without following definite methods can turn out to be quite a mess for our health. For example, regular consumption of raw leafy greens is not ideal. Here’s why.

Avoid Eating Direct Raw Leafy Greens

We all have read about leafy green vegetables having a rich content of plant toxins in biology during our school days. Though we are aware of the concept, many of us do not know its effects on our regular lifestyle. The doctor explained the process of plants protecting themselves from pests and insects with the help of protective chemicals called Phytotoxins.

An important point to note here is that phytotoxins are found in a more concentrated form in leaves in comparison to other plant parts, especially unexposed parts. Calling salads overrated, she shared that eating raw leafy greens is not good for our health, considering the long run.

Different studies and reports have contrasting opinions on phytotoxins and their impacts on human beings. While many state how these may be toxic, others claim it does not have any such health effects. To clear out all confusion and provide a set of detailed and factual information, Varalakshmi Yanamandra shared key points to take note of.

Phytotoxins In Vegetables & Their Effects

  • Spinach is rich in oxalates causing issues in calcium absorption. This problem can be solved by cooking the vegetable before eating.
  • Kale has goitrogens and this has the risk of impacting thyroid function. You can eat this leafy green after steaming it.
  • Rich in oxalic acid, Rhubarb can be harmful and cause mineral absorption. Eat the stalks only.
  • Oxalates can be found in high quantities in Swiss Chard and this can be a problem for regular mineral absorption. To eat this leafy green, make sure to boil it.
  • Sorrel contains oxalates that might be harmful to cause kidney issues. If you are eating it, be mindful of its potions and eat in less quantities.
  • Methi has saponins and it may lead to stomach problems. Soak it before cooking and then consume.
  • Phytates in Moringa can hinder proper mineral absorption. Before eating it, simply cook it well or ferment it.
