On Friday, the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) ordered people to stop using drinking water for activities like washing cars, building construction, gardening, fountains, and other entertainment purposes. They have also asked cinema halls and malls to restrict water usage to drinking and cleaning works. This ban comes amid the growing water crisis in Bengaluru.

According to the notice issued by BWSSB, a ban on the use of portable water for these activities has been imposed in Bengaluru. This order comes under sections 33 and 34 of the BWSSB Act 1964. They have urged people to use recycled water for these purposes.

Here’s what the notice said, “About 1.4 crore population has been identified in Bengaluru including permanent residents and those who are on transit. The supply of drinking water to all is essential. At present, the temperature is rising in the city every day, and the groundwater level has decreased due to the lack of rain in recent days. As a result, it is necessary to prevent wastage of water in the city and it has been made necessary for the public to use drinking water sparingly.”

Instructions Issued By Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board

The BWSSB has instructed the public to inform its helpline – 1916 – if they find anyone violating the ban. For now, they have imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on the violators. As per the order, “Anyone found violating the above order will be fined ₹5,000. For subsequent violations, ₹500 will be added to the fine on a per-day basis to the principal fine of ₹5,000.” The authorities also asked the meter readers to patrol their assigned areas daily to observe any violations.

The growing troubles of people in Bengaluru due to water are quite concerning. We hope the authorities can identify a more feasible solution for the ease of people in the city.
