Flying just got a little more streamlined, but also a bit more compact! As airports continue to bustle with growing passengers, the authorities are tightening up the rules on hand baggage. With the new hand baggage rules in place, here’s everything you need to know about the latest changes.
What’s New In The Hand Baggage Policy?
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) recently introduced new rules for the size and weight of the hand baggage you can carry. According to a News 18 report, these rules are meant to speed up processes at pre-embarkation security checkpoints because of the increasing number of passengers.
As of right now, passengers are only permitted to bring one piece of hand luggage per flight. This applies to both domestic and international flights. Anything else you bring with you must be checked in if you have more than one piece of hand luggage.
Weight Limit:
- Economy and Premium Economy: One handbag weighing up to 7 kg is allowed.
- First and Business Class: Passengers can carry one handbag weighing up to 10 kg.
- Size Limits: The dimensions of the hand baggage should not exceed 55 cm (21.6 inches) in height, 40 cm (15.7 inches) in length, and 20 cm (7.8 inches) in width.
Key Exemptions For May 2024 Travellers
Passengers who booked their tickets before May 2, 2024, will still be eligible for some exemptions.
- Economy class passengers can carry up to 8 kg.
- Premium economy passengers can carry up to 10 kg.
- First and business-class passengers can carry up to 12 kg.
However, any changes made after May 2, 2024, will result in the reservation falling under the new baggage policy, as per the reports from News 18.
These new regulations will help with increased passenger traffic at security checkpoints. Stricter baggage restrictions will expedite the security check, ease traffic and guarantee improved airport organisation. For most passengers, these new rules will simply mean that you’ll need to plan your hand baggage more carefully. You’ll need to pack smarter, as you’re limited to just one bag.
So, make sure your cabin bag is light, compact, and within the specified limits before you head to the airport!
