Good News! Germany Removes Transit Visa Rule For Indians; Here’s What This Means

This is amazing news for Indian travellers. Indians will no longer need an airport transit visa when travelling to another country through airports in Germany. The new rule, announced by the German Embassy in New Delhi, came into effect on June 3. Here’s how it will help make journeys smoother for travellers.

Indian Travellers Don’t Need A Transit Visa At Airports In Germany

Before getting into the details, let us briefly explain what a transit visa is. It is a short-term travel permit that allows you to briefly enter or pass through a country while travelling to your final destination. It used to be necessary at German airports for Indians, but not anymore. According to The Times of India, Indian nationals no longer require an airport transit visa when travelling to another country with a layover at an airport in Germany.

The removal of the airport transit visa requirement for Indian citizens came into effect on June 3. The announcement aims to ease travel procedures for Indian nationals transiting through Germany. It also reflects efforts by both nations to strengthen their bilateral ties.

Travellers Cannot Leave The Airport

Travellers should keep in mind that the removal of the transit visa requirement does not mean they can enter Germany. They are only allowed to remain in the airport’s transit zone and cannot leave the airport. According to The Economic Times, the measure was first announced during Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January this year.

However, Germany is not the first Schengen country to announce this rule. France had also removed the airport transit visa requirement for Indian travellers. It became the first Schengen country to fully eliminate the transit visa requirement for Indians. So, if you are travelling for a vacay and have a layover in Germany, you will not have to worry about getting a transit visa anymore. The news will definitely make many travellers happy!
