What Is Thailand Tattoo, And Why You Should Avoid Getting It?

A term ‘Thailand Tattoo’ is apparently going viral online. And no, it is not at all related to getting inked in Thailand. Apparently, many tourists are getting injured while riding scooters in this Southeast Asian country. It is one souvenir that many travellers should skip on this trip. Here is what you need to know.

What Does ‘Thailand Tattoo’ Really Mean?

A nomadic couple, Francesca and Valerio, who have explored more than 40 countries together, have now shed light on a term called ‘Thailand Tattoo’ on their Instagram account (@the.dreaming.road). According to them, it is a souvenir they are “definitely” skipping this trip. But what exactly is it? And no, it is not related to getting fancy tattoos while vacationing in Thailand.

It highlights how many tourists are seen with parts of their hands and legs covered in bandages, almost like a tattoo is covered. Turns out, many travellers suffer burns after renting motorbikes to get around. The couple mentioned how they prefer walking instead of riding a motorbike. Apparently, ‘Thailand Tattoo’ is an ironic term for burns from a scooter exhaust pipe, commonly received by tourists renting scooters.

How To Stay Safe While Riding Scooters?

Apart from burns, many travellers in Thailand also get their knees scraped while moving around in bustling markets. The most common causes include unfamiliarity with winding roads, reckless driving, lack of protective clothing, and inexperience with riding scooters. Many tourists have humorously called these injuries “tattoos” or a souvenir they bring back from a Thailand trip. Though it might sound amusing, these burns and injuries can seriously ruin your trip.

Here is how you can avoid getting a Thailand Tattoo:

  • Wear proper clothes, like long pants, while riding scooters.
  • Be extra careful with exhaust pipes, as they get very hot.
  • Always wear a helmet and follow local laws.
