The Real Reason Why Some Restaurant Glasses Smell Like Eggs Will Surprise You

Whenever we visit a restaurant, one basic problem we all face is smelling the utensils, especially the glasses. Relatable, isn’t it? While we always replace them, assuming they’re not washed properly, have you ever thought about the reason behind that smell? If not, then this social media creator has answered our most wondered-about question. Here’s what he has to say about it.

Why Do Restaurant Glasses Smell Like An Egg?

Social media influencer Kabir Chugh, who is known for his food- and restaurant-related content, recently shared an insightful video on his Instagram. The creator talked about how we all go to fancy restaurants and often find an egg-like smell in the glasses, and while we usually assume that it’s because the glass is dirty, that is not the real reason.

Sharing the real reason, he said it happens because when people in restaurants wash the glass and keep it to dry, they keep it in an upside-down manner. When the glasses are placed in that manner on the table, there is no space for the air to pass, and that stale air inside the glass is what causes a raw egg-like smell. So it’s not because the glass is dirty or it’s not washed properly; it’s because when it was washed, it didn’t have any space for the air to pass out.

What’s An Easy Hack To Combat This Problem?

He also stated how many restaurants or hotels are unaware of why this happens. Kabir not only informed us of the real reason behind it but also shared an easy hack to prevent the smell. He said to replace the usual table mats with the rubber mats, which elevate the glass so there is some space for air to pass through, keeping the glass fresh and clean.

Just after he posted the video, people flooded the comments, some with their own theory and others with their reaction. One user commented, “I feel it’s the dirty scrub which they use to wash the glasses. It never happens when we keep upside down at home.” While the other commented, “Wow, I didn’t know this.”
