People in Russia and Japan woke up to a major disaster when an 8.8 magnitude undersea earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. It triggered tsunami waves up to 4 metres high, prompting immediate evacuations and alerts across Japan and several other Pacific nations. The earthquake struck at a depth of 19 km and was centred about 125 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. According to a report by India Today, several buildings in Russia were damaged, and emergency protocols were activated. However, no major casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
The tsunami also reached Russia’s Kuril Islands and Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido. It caused significant damage to ports, and at least four whales were found washed ashore on Japan’s coastline. According to the US Geological Survey, this is the sixth-largest earthquake ever recorded.

State Of Emergency Declared
As reported by The Times of India, Japan’s national broadcaster NHK warned that larger waves could still follow. They had earlier stated that tsunami waves of up to three metres could hit northern and eastern coastal regions, possibly reaching as far south as Wakayama, near Osaka. People are being urged to remain cautious and follow all safety measures.
Authorities in Russia’s Sakhalin region declared a state of emergency after the tsunami caused severe flooding in the northern Kuril Islands on Wednesday. Several videos circulating on social media show large volumes of water submerging land and coastal buildings. In Severo-Kurilsk, a small town in Kamchatka, people were asked to evacuate their homes as a precaution. The public is being strongly advised to stay away from coastal areas as well. A tsunami warning was also issued for people living in Hawaii, Alaska, and along the Pacific coast of the United States. US President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social account, urging people to stay safe.
