Goa has always been a dream destination for Indians! With its beautiful beaches, lively nightlife, and laid-back vibe, the place checks all the necessary vacation needs of the people. However, according to a report shared on X (formerly Twitter), foreign tourism in Goa is declining and has failed to reach pre-COVID levels. Many Indian netizens commented on the post and blamed the “taxi mafia” and overpriced hotels for this decline in tourism.
Report Shows Decline In Foreign Tourism In Goa
X (formerly Twitter) user Ramanuj Mukherjee shared a CEIC Data report showing a decline in foreign tourism in Goa. He shared data showing a steady decline in foreign tourists in the state and said, “Tourism in Goa is down in dumps.”
Tourism in Goa is down in dumps
Foreign tourists have abandoned the state already. Look at 2019 v 2023 numbers. Russians and Brits who used to visit annually have opted for Sri Lanka instead.

The CEIC report shows that about 1.5 million foreign tourists visited Goa in 2023, a sharp decline from 8.5 million in 2019. In comparison, domestic tourism has been steadily recovering since COVID-19. The data shows that domestic tourism has almost fully reached the pre-COVID levels.
In his post, Ramanuj says that “foreign tourists have abandoned the state already.” He feels that the Russians and British tourists, who used to visit Goa annually, are now opting for Sri Lanka instead.

The Goan taxi mafia is decades old. My parents used to talk about it in early 90’s, he was an officer in can’t disclose investigation department.

Thanks to the taxi mafias, which also play a part, Goa truly stands out from other destinations. I was there for just a couple of days, but it felt like stepping into a hidden paradise. Few people know about Goa’s lesser known beaches and untouched wildlife, making it all the…

It’s the greed of the local people and the tourism industry. Poor infrastructure, Taxi scams and corrupt drivers, they all want to make quick money without thinking of long term impact . Those who want to come will come, but for most, there’ll always be more choices. Right from…

Went to Goa once in 2018
Had multiple bad experiences with locals for car hire, hotel etc. On top of that it was very expensive.
Compared to that Thailand was awesome… wonderful people, great food, readily available taxi service like Grab, and slightly cheaper than Goa.
Why…— kolkatatheke (@kolkatatheke) November 5, 2024
Taxi mafia also one of the reasons.

With Thailand making it Visa free for Indian, it’s going to be worse for Goa..
— CA Akash Singroli (@akash_singroli) November 5, 2024
Had a disastrous experience with local vendors last year. Ripping off for vehicle rentals and taxi hires was the final nail in the coffin. If the attitude of locals doesn’t improve then it’s the end of Goa’s tourism industry.
