As per a report in HT, Pune Metro is now planning to add 15 new trains to enhance connectivity. These additional metro trains are being introduced for the two newly approved metro corridors. What’s more? Each train will have 3 coaches. This means 45 new coaches will be added to the fleet in the coming months. Pune Metro Rail also confirmed this news on their official X handle on June 28.
Currently, Pune Metro operates 34 trains with a total of 102 coaches, carrying over 1.7 lakh passengers daily. With the addition of these 15 new trains, the total number will rise to 49 trains and 147 coaches. This expansion aims to reduce crowding in the trains and shorten commute times for passengers. The new trains will be introduced once the ongoing work on the new corridors is complete.

Authorities Plan To Reduce The Train Frequency Time
As per HT, Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) of Pune Metro, also said that they plan to reduce the train frequency from 7 minutes to 5 minutes, which will later go down to 3 minutes. This move will support the rising number of daily commuters. If needed, they will also increase the number of coaches in existing trains from 3 to 6. He added that out of 34 trains, 31 are currently running, while 2 more trains will be delivered soon by the company.
As per the report, Pune Metro’s daily ridership is expected to reach 3.5 lakh passengers in the coming years. Hemant Sonawane, Director of PR and Admin at Pune Metro, said the Central Government approved two new routes: Swargate to Katraj (in August 2024) and PCMC to Nigdi (in October 2023). The detailed project report (DPR) for these new routes includes funding for the 15 new trains.
Talking about the timings, Pune Metro trains currently run every 7 minutes during the peak hours of 8 am to 11 am. During non-peak hours (6 am-8 am, 11 am-4 pm, and 8 pm-10 pm), the frequency is 10 minutes. From 10 pm to 11 pm, trains run every 15 minutes.
These additional trains will make metro travel easier during rush hours. They will reduce waiting time and improve connectivity across the city.
