Rain-related incidents have claimed nine more lives in Gujarat. This takes the death toll in the state to 16 in two days. Also, due to incessant rainfall, authorities evacuated more than 20,000 people as flood-like situation persists in various districts across the state. Heavy Rains In Gujarat Claim 16 Lives In 2 Days

Heavy showers continued to lash the coastal state of Gujarat and claimed 16 lives in different rain-related incidents in just two days! According to a Hindustan Times report, nine people died in rain-related incidents in different parts of Gujarat on Tuesday. Meanwhile, seven deaths were reported in the state on Monday. The causes of these deaths have been reported as collapse of walls and drowning due to heavy rainfall.

Around three deaths were reported due to a wall collapse in Anand district on Tuesday. Two casualties were reported in Mahisagar district, one each in Kheda and Ahmedabad districts due to wall collapse incidents. Two lives were claimed in Junagadh and Bharuch district due to drowning. Authorities, thankfully, were able to rescue around 169 persons from Kheda and Morbi districts on Tuesday.

As per the report, 137 reservoirs and lakes, and 24 rivers in Gujarat are flowing above the danger marks due to the heavy rains. This is causing flood-like situations in the low-lying areas. Gujarat has, reportedly, received 105% of its average annual rainfall so far!

20,000 People Shifted To Shelters As Flood-Like Situation Persists

Around 23,000 people were rescued from flood-affected areas with rains continuing to lash parts of Gujarat for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday. Various relief and rescue operations were carried out and thousands of people were shifted to rescue shelters. Gujarat has taken help from the National Disaster Response Force, its state counterpart State Disaster Response Force, the Army, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Coast Guard.

As per reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to know more about the situation in the state. He also assured him that the government would provide Gujarat with all the necessary support to make it through this crisis.

As per the India Meteorological Department’s latest forecast, Gujarat can expect a respite from rain in the coming days. They have predicted that the “deep depression hovering over the Saurashtra-Kachchh and north Gujarat regions will move out of the affected areas by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning”
