Harsh LED Lights At DPS Lake, Navi Mumbai, That Blind Flamingoes To Be Replaced With Yellow Bulbs

In a bid to save the flamingoes who flock to the DPS Lake in Navi Mumbai, the LED lights will be replaced. The City Industrial Development Corporation or CIDCO has taken this measure after environmentalists raised concerns about it. The light pollution owing to the use of LEDs caused significant harm to the delicate pink birds. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this particular update in Navi Mumbai.

LED Lights Blinding Flamingoes At DPS Lake In Navi Mumbai To Be Replaced

According to an article which was recently published by mid-day, the LED Lights will be replaced by yellow bulbs. The bulbs will be fixed on the elevated Nerul Jetty road. CIDCO has floated an e-tender for this project and the deadline for bid submissions is Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

It was also recommended that these lamps should be adjusted at an angle of 45 degrees facing downwards. This will further reduce the adverse effects of light pollution on the birds. This recommendation was made by the Bombay Natural History Society or BNHS.

It is hoped that once this change is accomplished, the flamingoes that migrate to the region during the next year will not have to suffer through the same unfortunate fate as the ones that came before.

Blinded And Disoriented The Birds Causing Their Death

If reports are to go by, this step is crucial as the bright LED lights blinded the delicate pink birds and disoriented them. This would result in them flying into hoardings and dying. This happened with seven flamingoes already.

Another ten died owing to disorientation caused by lights and worsened by lack of food. The lack of food is owing to the lake drying up as per NatConnect Foundation.
