Health Officials Find Expired Food At Kerala Unit Allegedly Catering For Indian Railways

In a shocking discovery, health authorities in Kerala found large quantities of expired food items at a catering unit in Ernakulam. The unit, allegedly linked to Indian Railways’ catering services, operated without a valid licence and was disposing of waste illegally into a nearby canal. Officials also uncovered packaging materials bearing the Vande Bharat Express logo, intensifying concerns over passenger food safety.

During a recent inspection by Kochi Corporation officials, the Brandavan Food Products unit in Ernakulam was found storing expired food items in both its main facility and a nearby warehouse. According to The Economic Times, these items included rice, bakery goods, and prepared meals, some of which had expired in early 2024.

The health department conducted the raid following complaints from local residents about foul smells and suspected unhygienic practices. Officials discovered that the facility operated without a mandatory licence from the local body. The corporation has since ordered its closure and sealed the premises.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, authorities found the unit disposing of food waste directly into a canal, violating environmental safety norms. Among the seized materials were boxes, glasses, and disposable packaging bearing the logo of Vande Bharat Express. As reported by The Economic Times, this has raised suspicions that the unit supplied food for premium Indian Railways services, including Vande Bharat trains.

While the exact nature of the partnership remains under investigation, a senior railway official confirmed that the matter has been forwarded to the relevant department.
