Kerala is a scenic and beautiful Indian state. The title ‘God’s Own Country’ does justice to the serene stretch of backwaters. Yet, it is prone to floods and other calamities that occur due to heavy rainfall. In recent years, Kerala has seen more destruction and deaths than any other state. A landslide occurred on the Munnar-Vattavada road in the Idukki district of Kerala. Heavy rainfall was the reason for the landslide. A tempo carrying passengers got washed away. The driver is reportedly missing.
The Landslide Accident In Kerala
The incident took place on 12th November. Roopesh, a resident of Vadakara, got trapped in the vehicle. The tempo that got washed away was a part of a tour group from Vadakara. The Munnar police stated that the other vehicles and passengers managed to escape, except for the tempo driver. Further, they located the vehicle around 700 meters downhill. Wild elephants have inhabited the same area. Due to poor visibility and heavy rainfall, the rescue operation got interrupted on Saturday evening. However, it resumed on Sunday morning. Idukki District Collector Sheeba George confirmed these details.
Earlier, the India Meteorological Department had given alerts for Kerala. The district of Idukki received an orange alert which indicates heavy rainfall. Many districts have a yellow warning issued. As Idukki is a hot spot for heavy rains, it is susceptible to devastating landslides. The situation in Kerala is said to get worse, according to IMD.
