Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2025 Begins: Over 4,400 Pilgrims Embark On Spiritual Himalayan Journey

The much-awaited Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2025 officially began on 25 May, marking the start of one of the most revered Sikh pilgrimages in India. Nestled at an altitude of 15,200 feet in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, Hemkund Sahib welcomed over 4,400 pilgrims on the very first day. The journey, known for its spiritual significance and physically demanding trek, attracts thousands of devotees every year who make the climb to pay homage at the gurudwara believed to be the meditation site of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru.

Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2025 Opens With A Strong Start

According to a report by The Times of India, the yatra commenced with a turnout of over 4,400 pilgrims who started the journey from Govindghat. This base point lies roughly 275 km from Rishikesh and serves as the entry to the trekking route. Pilgrims typically halt overnight at Ghangaria, the base camp before the final 6 km steep climb to the shrine. The route demands physical fitness and caution due to the high altitude and changing weather conditions.

The yatra is set to continue until 10 October 2025, giving devotees ample time to make the pilgrimage across the months. Authorities have ensured that basic amenities such as rest stops, medical facilities, and food stalls are readily available along the route. Devotees and a politician, Impreet Singh Bakshi shared glimpses of the yatra’s opening ceremony on X, capturing the spiritual energy of the moment.

eKYC System Streamlines Registration Process

To streamline registrations and enhance security, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board has introduced an Aadhaar-based eKYC system this year. As reported by DD News, this digital feature helps track pilgrim movement and reduces the burden of physical paperwork. So far, more than 7.5 lakh people have already registered for the Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2025, reflecting strong interest among the Sikh community and spiritual travellers.

This initiative also allows authorities to manage crowd flow more efficiently, ensuring a safer and more organised trekking experience for all visitors.

Pilgrims Advised To Prepare For The Trek

Given the altitude and terrain, officials recommend a day’s acclimatisation at Ghangaria before the final ascent. According to YatraDham.org, travellers should focus on fitness preparation and carry essentials like layered clothing, waterproof gear, energy snacks, and medicines. Starting the trek early in the morning helps avoid unpredictable weather and ensures timely return to the base camp.
