Travelling has its own perquisites and disadvantages. We are aware of this! But is it a reason enough to not backpack around the world and live your best life? Of Course not. Proper research is enough to ensure a safe trip. And if you are planning a trip to Ladakh, there is one thing you need to be careful of. Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS is very common at high altitudes. Here are a few points to help you deal with altitude sickness in Ladakh.

1. Avoid Smoking & Alcohol consumption

Ladakh is located at an altitude of 3500 meters above sea level and is a high-altitude desert area.
When the altitude increases, the number of oxygen molecules per breath gets reduced. There are roughly 40% fewer oxygen molecules per breath. So your body must adjust to having less oxygen. Smoking and alcohol consumption here will surely interfere with the body’s oxygen metabolism. So be mindful. You will even find boards put up by the Indian Army asking people to avoid smoking at such heights.

2. Proceed Slowly

Time and patience are your keys to dealing with altitude sickness in Ladakh. You need to let your body relax and rest. Ride and walk slowly. Stop for a day after a climb above 2400 meters. You have to give your body enough time to acclimatize. Be smart and proceed in a way where you are hit gradually by the altitude gain.

4. Best Sleeping Habits When In Ladakh

It is important you get proper sleep during your trip. But your regular sleeping habits might need a change here. Firstly, try to avoid sleeping at a place where you are already suffering from altitude sickness in Ladakh. Once you start getting any symptoms, stop immediately and rest. If that doesn’t help, proceed downwards. Also, your sleeping position matters a lot. Sleep in an upright position and with your head on a pillow. Avoid sleeping during the day.

Applying 2 to 3 drops of lavender oil can decrease restlessness and stomach discomfort, some of the symptoms of AMS. Either apply on your head or inhale. Garlic can also help reduce altitude sickness in Ladakh. Chewing garlic will help the body use oxygen more efficiently and reduce breathlessness. So don’t forget to carry your garlic and oils!
