Around 3.7 million Indian nationals live in the United Arab Emirates, while millions more go to and conduct business there each year. People have recently been stopped and detained in a few instances for carrying large amounts of cash, including millions of dirhams and Indian rupees. So how much cash should you carry? What is the permissible limit? Here is an important information on UAE-India travel for you.
Cash You Can Carry On Your UAE-India Travel
Purchasing foreign currency is only permitted up to $3,000 (Dh11,000) per visit for visitors coming to the UAE and most other countries, according to information published on the Reserve Bank of India’s website.
The regulatory body permits NRIs to carry larger sums in the form of banker’s drafts, store value cards, or traveler’s checks.
A resident of India who has traveled abroad is permitted to bring back up to Rs25,000 worth of Indian currency notes, according to the RBI. However, individuals from Nepal or Bhutan are permitted to bring rupee notes with a maximum denomination of 100 rupees.
A visitor from outside India can bring as much foreign currency as they like into the country.
However, if the total value of the foreign currency brought in in the form of currency notes, bank notes, or traveler’s checks exceeds $10,000 or its equivalent, or if the value of the foreign currency alone exceeds $5,000 or its equivalent, it must be declared to the customs authorities in the Currency Declaration Form (CDF), at the airport, upon arrival in India.

Permits For Hajj And Umrah Pilgrims
Indian citizens traveling for Hajj and Umrah are also permitted to have $250,000 in cash on them.
Travelers to Iraq and Libya are permitted to bring $5,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency per visit. According to a statement on the apex bank website, travelers going to Iran, Russia, or the Commonwealth of Independent States are permitted to withdraw up to $250,000 in foreign cash in the form of foreign currency notes or coins.
A guy traveling to Dubai was detained at the Mumbai airport earlier this month after customs officers discovered more than Dh1.42 million (cash) in his bag, according to reports in the Indian media. (As per RBI)
