Hurricane Oscar made landfall in Cuba on Sunday evening and added to the woes of the country’s residents. On Monday, the hurricane caused heavy rainfall in eastern Cuba amid a nearly nationwide power outage. The hurricane is now heading towards the Bahamas and has severely impacted travel across the Caribbean. Read on to know more about this.

Cuba Struggles As Hurricane Oscar Causes Nationwide Power Outage

Hurricane Oscar hit Cuba as a Category 1 hurricane. After weakening, it drenched eastern Cuba. The region experienced maximum winds at 65 kmph on Monday evening. Now, the storm is moving towards the Bahamas and a tropical storm warning has been issued for central and southeastern parts of the country.

In Cuba, the residents were already struggling with an almost nationwide power outage on its third day! According to France 24, the hurricane during the major power blackout over the weekend caused around six deaths in the country. As per the latest update, 90% of power was restored in Havana. However, residents outside Havana remained without power.

Cuba has been facing power issues after the country’s largest power plant collapsed on Friday. Millions of residents across the country were left protesting in the dark as the authorities failed to restore power before Monday evening.

Travel Chaos Across The Caribbean, Tourists Alerted

Not just Cuba, Hurricane Oscar has caused major trouble across the Caribbean. The hurricane is causing major disruptions for tourists, especially cruise passengers and those planning or already visiting Cuba and the Bahamas. Due to the strong winds of Hurricane Oscar, cruise lines are unable to dock the ships across the Caribbean. They have to cancel and adjust routes to ensure passenger safety. As per Travel And Tour World, Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas, Carnival’s Carnival Glory and Carnival Sunshine, and Disney’s Disney Wish have been some of the worst affected cruise lines on this route.

Due to rain and high winds, tourists travelling to Cuba and the Bahamas have been alerted. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions in the region right now, people are being warned to stay indoors and avoid beach areas for now. Several airlines have also warned passengers travelling to and from the Bahamas to stay updated and informed of any delays or cancellations.
