The Nehru Zoological Park will soon be home to India’s largest aquarium. It will feature fish species from Asia, Africa, and America. As per TOI, the aquarium will be developed on a one-acre plot at an estimated cost of ₹50 crore. The project will be carried out under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. At present, the Nehru Zoological Park has 15 small aquariums which display both freshwater and marine species.

A Tunnel-Style Walk Through Aquarium

The new aquarium will be built in a tunnel-style design, which will also include exotic fish species. Visitors can walk through it for a unique viewing experience. However, the NZP is currently awaiting final approval from the central zoo authority to go ahead with the project. In comparison, the Aquatic Gallery in Science City, Ahmedabad, and Marine World in Thrissur are currently the two largest aquariums in India. The former covers around 15,000 square metres of area.

Zoo Director Sunil S Hiremath stated that a detailed project, similar to the one in Ahmedabad, is being developed for NZP and will be finalised by 2026, as per The Times of India. The project involves a collaboration of both private and multinational firms from Singapore and Australia, two countries known for their expertise in aquariums. Apart from the aquarium, the zoo also plans a bulletproof tiger enclosure worth ₹2 crore. This new project will let visitors observe big cats closely through protective glass.
