Known for its colourful storage containers, Tupperware is an iconic brand! Now, after struggling with declining sales, the brand has filed for bankruptcy. According to a Business Standard report, Tupperware Brands and its subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US on Tuesday.

Reportedly, the company has been struggling for years due to growing competition, dwindling sales, and mounting debt. It did see a little boost during the COVID-19 pandemic but it was a short-lived surge. After that, due to an increase in the costs of raw materials like plastic resin, as well as labour and freight, the company continued to struggle. In June 2024, Tupperware closed its only US factory and laid off almost 150 employees.

Now, after months of negotiations between the company and its lenders for more than $700 million in loans, Tupperware has decided to file for bankruptcy. As per the Business Standard report, lenders had agreed to give the company more time to repay the debt, but the declining sales pushed them to take this step.

Tupperware was founded by Earl Tupper in 1946. This kitchenware brand was the first to introduce plastic containers with flexible airtight seals. They then patented these seals and enjoyed years of domination in the sector. In the 1950s, US homes were flooded with these airtight containers, all thanks to the “Tupperware parties” held by the women of the post-war generation. These colourful plastic containers became a symbol of empowerment and independence for the women in the 50s. This popularity contributed to its worldwide expansion as well. According to Wikimedia, as of 2023, Tupperware traded in 82 countries!
