While studying in school, we all studied about the Indus Valley civilization. This Bronze Age civilization was known for its impeccable urban planning. But the valley saw the beginning of a decline around 1800 BCE. What caused its decline? IFS Susanta Nanda tweeted about the same and connected the decline to climate change. The tweet is now deleted, but this is how he connected the two!
Role Of Climate Change In Indus Valley Decline
There have been many theories surrounding the decline of the Indus Valley civilization. IFS (Indian Forest Services) Susanta Nanda shared a tweet where he emphasised that a change in temperatures and weather patterns caused the summer monsoon rains to gradually decrease.
Agriculture in the vicinity of Harappan cities had become increasingly difficult or impossible as a result.
Two rainfall maps were included in the IFS officer’s tweet, which provided information on the recent precipitation patterns. The district-level rainfall map showed how the amount of rain varied by region. The state-by-state rainfall chart, meanwhile, gave a general picture of the amount of precipitation experienced across the nation. The tweet is now deleted. (As per News 18)
People Expressed Their Concern
This looks worrying
Can’t control weather and the global efforts towards climate change seems minimal.
India too seems unclear about mitigation as on one side we promote green h and sustainability but on the other hand we allow tpp to remain a major pollutant.
ACTION NOW

Soon after, the tweet explaining the role of climate change in the Indus Valley’s decline raised people’s concerns. People commented about how climate change is affecting their day-to-day lives and asked others to be aware and act.
Climate change is real but these types of hyperbolic claims and predictions of doomsday actually strengthen the climate change deniers. Think about it.

The Harappan culture flourished more than 4,000 years ago in the Indus Valley, which is present-day Pakistan and northwest India. They established advanced urban centres, created sewage systems earlier than Rome did, and conducted long-distance trade with Mesopotamian communities.
However, by 1800 BCE, this advanced civilization had moved from their cities to smaller settlements in the foothills of the Himalayas.
