Understanding the importance of a healthy lifestyle, people these days are following a strict diet plan and looking for alternatives to sugar-loaded sweets. Seeing this, the Institute of Hotel Management in Kolkata recently created a sugar-free version of Bengali sandesh. What sets it apart is that it was made using activated charcoal and stevia extract.
Bengali Sandesh With Charcoal & Stevia
The Institute of Hotel Management in Kolkata was founded in 1962 and is the oldest college under the Union Ministry of Tourism. Recently, the college made headlines for giving a healthy approach to the famous Bengali sweet–sandesh.
They introduced a sugar-free version of the sweetmeat, and to make it sweeter, they added stevia instead of artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame. The Telegraph India reported that the institute used stevia as it doesn’t cause any harm to the body.

The Institute of Hotel Management took to X (formerly Twitter) to share various benefits of this sweet:
- Chenna used had a high-protein and low-calorie composition
- The use of stevia makes it diabetic- and weight-friendly
- Charcoal in the sweet helps in detoxification
- Almonds and ghee have heart-healthy fats
- All ingredients are gluten-free and clean-label
Interesting Choice Of Ingredient
The other ingredient that caught everyone’s attention is that instead of keeping the usual colour, IHM decided to use charcoal. According to them, it has detoxing properties and adds a dark hue to the sweet. Apart from this, this sweet included many other healthy items like chenna, ghee and almonds. And lastly, it’s gluten-free with no artificial colours used.
Marking this sweet as their unique creation, the IHM College has patented it and has not yet released it in the market. This healthy alternative to the Bengali sandesh is the joint hard work of faculty members and students.
While talking to TOI, Raja Sadhukhan, the principal of the college, said that they received the patent a few days ago. He added that the students and faculty members worked hard for this recognition. He also said that the reason behind introducing this healthy version of Bengali sandesh is to offer a choice of sweets to people who eat protein bars, drinks, and snacks.
