In the midst of the ongoing food fight at the prestigious university, a student at IIT Bombay sent an email to the administration on Saturday complaining that some students were using the serving utensils of non-vegetarian cuisine for Jain or vegetarian dishes.

The student said in an email that he saw another student grab an omelette from the non-vegetarian counter and then use the same ladle to collect goods from the Jain or vegetarian counter on October 5 between 9:35 and 9:50 a.m.

He walked over to the student and gently reminded him of the significance of not touching non-vegetarian things with a vegetarian spoon after removing them from the counter. But he gave a fairly contemptuous reply.

Students Fined For A Protest

A student who took part in the silent protest against the “vegetarian-only” table at the institute received a heavy fine of ₹10,000 from IIT Bombay a few days ago. The institute has also opened an investigation to find further protesters.

The institute’s Mess Council conducted a virtual meeting on October 1 after previously announcing that six tables in a shared canteen between three dorms would be reserved for vegetarians only. Last month, the mess council sent out an email to all of its residents letting them know about the special “vegetarian-only” tables. According to it, only vegetarian food will only be provided at these tables.

In India, everyone has their preferred diet, including vegetarian, non-vegetarian, vegan and so on. Some prefer eating non-vegetarian food only on certain days while others prefer eating it throughout the week. What you eat is a personal choice and this debate has once again sparked the vegetarian vs non-vegetarian debate.
