It seems like North India isn’t getting any respite from the heat any time soon! Delhi-NCR and many parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh experienced a maximum temperature of 46°C on Saturday. Seeing this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ warning for a heatwave on May 19 in these areas. They also warned that severe heatwaves will loom over North India for another four days. Read on to know more.

IMD Issues Red Alert For North India, Max Temp Reaches 46°C

IMD has issued a ‘red alert’ for heatwaves in North India for May 19 and even warned about more heatwaves in the next few days. The ‘red alert’ has been issued in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and West Rajasthan. Another ‘orange alert’ for heatwaves has been issued in Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan. On May 18, many parts of these states observed a maximum temperature surpassing 45°C. In fact, many cities recorded a maximum temperature of 46°C! In Delhi, Mungeshpur recorded the highest temperature of 46.8°C.

The meteorological department further mentioned that the scorching heat in North India will continue for another four days. IMD issues a red alert during extreme weather conditions that can cause “high health concern” for vulnerable people. These usually include infants, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases.

Southern India To Welcome Rain In The Next Few Days

While North India reels from heatwaves, there is some respite for South Indian states. According to IMD’s forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over different parts of Southern states till May 23, and extremely heavy rainfall from May 19 to May 21.

According to IMD’s bulletin, here’s the complete forecast, “Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Kerala and Mahe on 18th and 22nd and South Interior Karnataka during 18th-20th May 2024. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also very likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala during 19th-21st May 2024.”
