In A Bid To Make Issuing Visas Easier, US Considers ‘Treaty Country’ Status For India

On Friday, a Trade Policy Forum meeting was held between India and the US. The meeting was co-chaired by Piyush Goyal, who is the Commerce and Industry Minister of India, and Katherine Tai, who is the US Trade Representative. One of the major proposals put forth in the meeting was that the US should consider granting India the status of a Treaty Country. The US is consequently mulling the proposal over.

US Considers Treaty Country Status For India

According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or HT, granting India ‘treaty country’ status would open up new E1 and E2 options for Indian passport holders who are travelling to the US for business purposes.

E1 is the treaty trader visa and E2 is the treaty investor visa. These visas are non-immigrant in nature. Accordingly, this means that if you get this visa, it will not open up avenues for permanent residency in the country. It will simply allow the visa holder to travel to the US temporarily.

As per the HT article, the proposal suggested by the Indian government talked about a step which would allow Indian passport holders to get these visas.

Here’s What It Means And What Benefits It Could Have

As of now, the US has given close to 100 countries the status of treaty countries including but not limited to Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Taiwan. As per the HT article, giving India a treaty country status will only facilitate trade and commerce.

E1 and E2 visas will allow for ease of setting up or investing in businesses in the US and hence, the country should consider adding India to its Treaty Country list.
