In a remarkable step towards gender inclusivity, India flagged off its first Tri-Services All-Women Sailing Expedition from the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This inspiring mission brings together women officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force aboard the iconic sailing vessel INSV Tarini.

The Tri-Services All-Women Sailing Expedition aims to foster inter-services cooperation while promoting the strength and resilience of women in uniform. The crew includes six officers—two each from the Army, Navy, and Air Force—who will sail along India’s western coastline, touching ports like Goa and Karwar before returning to Mumbai.
This initiative showcases the evolving role of women in India’s defence forces and highlights their ability to take on challenging operational tasks. According to BharatShakti.in, this expedition highlights the growing participation of women in operational roles and showcases their readiness for challenging maritime missions. Covering over 2,100 nautical miles, it’s a true demonstration of endurance and teamwork.

Charting New Horizons For Women In Defence
In a proud and historic moment, Lt Gen AK Ramesh, Commandant, College of Military Engineering (CME), flagged off the All Women Circumnavigation Sailing Expedition #SamudraPradakshina from the INWTC, Mumbai.

Launched under the Navy Welfare and Wellness Association (NWWA), the expedition was flagged off by Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff. He commended the officers’ commitment and applauded the armed forces’ shift towards creating equal opportunities for women.
Speaking at the event, Admiral Kumar called it a “milestone moment” that reflects the changing mindset of India’s defence forces and their move towards becoming more inclusive and progressive.

Inspiring Coastal Communities And Next Generation
During their voyage, the officers will engage with local communities, especially young girls, through outreach activities at coastal stops. The aim is to inspire them to explore careers in the armed forces and raise awareness about marine sustainability.
