In India, potholes are ubiquitous on roadways, it seems. Despite spending crores of rupees in their making, many roadways do not hold up when monsoon rains arrive. As soon as the weather goes south, so does the quality of roadways. Recently, ‘The Indian Express’ reported that the Akshardham Flyover was facing a similar situation. It is in terrible condition having numerous potholes and rough patches. Here are the details.

According to an article recently published by the ‘The Indian Express’, the Noida-Link road stretch was extremely bumpy and nightmarish to travel through. The road near the Akshardham temple which receives high pedestrian as well as vehicular traffic, was in an especially bad condition.

Given that the flyover was inaugurated in 2019 at the cost of ₹50 crores, the speed at which the road has deteriorated is quite alarming. In addition to having potholes, many areas on the road are quite uneven making the journey bumpy and difficult.

The article also describes the poor condition of the road a little ahead, where it forks in two ways. One way heads toward the Geeta Colony, and the other to Vikas Marg. The article mentions that the carpeting on the road had peeled off and exposed the concrete underneath.

The article goes on to mention that such damaged and poor condition of roadways is ubiquitous throughout Delhi. Roads in areas like Hauz Khas, Aurobindo Marg, Adchini, Mayur Vihar 1, and more, were in similarly shoddy condition.

When contacted, the Public Works Department or the PWD officials stated the charge of maintaining this roadway was transferred to the National Highways Authority of India.

This transfer of charge happened in June last year. An NHAI official told The Indian Express that tenders for repairs were floated and that teh reparation work should soon be underway. The official even said the work will be completed before the G-20 Summit in September, later this year.
