India’s aviation sector faced significant disruption as authorities closed 27 airports and cancelled more than 400 flights across Northern, Western, and Central regions. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) implemented these measures due to temporary airspace restrictions in place until May 10, 2025. This decision has impacted thousands of passengers and caused delays at several major terminals, including Jaipur, Amritsar, and Bhopal.
Massive Travel Disruption Across Key Regions
The shutdown has affected air connectivity in states such as Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. According to a report by The Times of India, the DGCA issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), suspending civilian flight operations at these airports. The decision aims to manage restricted airspace, possibly due to national security exercises or government-led preparedness drills.

Travellers using routes in and out of affected cities are experiencing flight cancellations, reschedules, and long queues at check-in counters. Some terminals, especially in Chandigarh and Agra, have reduced services to a minimum. Staff at airports are managing stranded passengers and assisting with booking alternatives.
Over 430 Flights Cancelled, Airlines Notify Passengers
As reported by The Economic Times, airlines including IndiGo, Vistara, Air India, and SpiceJet have cancelled more than 430 flights across domestic and international sectors. Airlines have begun notifying affected passengers via SMS and email while waiving rescheduling charges. Many travellers are receiving full refunds or alternate booking options without additional fees.

Passengers have been urged to check flight status updates on airline websites or apps before heading to airports. Flight operations in unaffected zones such as South and Eastern India continue normally.
Situation To Remain In Place Until May 10, Subject To Review
The airspace restrictions will remain active until May 10, 2025, unless lifted earlier. Officials have yet to confirm the exact reason behind the NOTAM. However, past incidents suggest such restrictions often accompany defence operations or national-level events. Authorities are monitoring the situation and may provide updates if conditions change.
