A tourism entrepreneur recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to talk about India’s tourism reputation. According to his post, he feels that domestic tourists are shunning India to travel abroad. Furthermore, most middle and upper-middle-class domestic tourists are not happy with the high airfares and expensive local logistics. He even talked about India’s reputation as an international destination. Scroll on to know his perspective on this.
Tourism Entrepreneur On India’s Reputation In The Tourism Sector
I am part of the tourism industry and have been vociferously saying this for the last 2+ years – we have become an overpriced dump of a destination.
Every single agent/partner of ours in the UK, EU, Australia & USA has the following questions – air quality, general hygiene &… pic.twitter.com/C1B6mZYuUL

Anand Sankar is a tourism entrepreneur in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. Recently, he shared a post of a British Indian tourist who stayed in India for three years and called it “a dump.” In the post, he called Asian countries like Vietnam better than India for tourists. According to the shared post, “India is in denial about its global reputation.” In his caption, Anand said that he shares the sentiment of the man and has been “vociferously saying this for the last 2+ years.” He feels India has “become an overpriced dump of a destination.”
From his own experience, he mentions that every agent/partner from the UK, EU, Australia, and the USA questioned him about “air quality, general hygiene & cleanliness, women’s safety & incoherent chaotic internal logistics” while planning their travel to India. He added, “I haven’t seen the reputation of India in tourism as low as this. There is no optimism and mystique anymore – every potential inbound visitor is seeing the news and reading on social media.”
Not just on the international front, he feels domestic tourists are also choosing international destinations for travel now. He feels the majority of the middle and upper-middle-class domestic tourists are “put off by high domestic airfares and expensive local logistics.” Furthermore, “inbound tourism numbers have not crossed 2019 numbers after the pandemic,” he adds.

Netizens Share Their Two Cents On This Post
As you can imagine, this tweet by Anand Sankar on India’s reputation in the tourism sector has gone viral. Interestingly enough, the majority of the comments in this post echo his thoughts. People have shared their own experiences travelling abroad and in India and how the comparison is quite heartbreaking. Some of them even tried to explain why the tourism sector is suffering in the country. Here are some comments you cannot miss out on.
In Vietnam now, and echo your thoughts.
The local tourism is sufficient for their running costs. Inbound bring in the margins.
Every tourist destination’s infra works so seamlessly!
I think ppl too makes a difference, not just the govt.

Super painful to read your post and the attached screenshot but every word is accurate. Paid an arm and leg for a basic family vacation in Coorg and Mysore. Hardly any memorable experiences to speak of. ‘Stress’ was the major feeling all through. Phuket was the exact opposite.

We, as a society, are not honest, passionate and genuinely caring. Hv been on multiple road trips since the past 10 yrs. I hardly have a fond hotel memory. Everyone out there is there to squeeze money out of you, offering minimum in return.

Two reasons why
During COVID
After slashing staff to a minimum
Most establishments realised that a skeletal staff is sufficient
And secondly the revenge tourism had people compromising on quality just to get out

We checked bungalow/homestay options at a local Keralam tourist location – ₹25k for 2 people, for a night. Our state is reasonably clean, but ₹25k? LoL, no. South East Asia it is.

anyone who had set foot in any of the SE Asian country will know how pathetic we are across all parameters. there is benchmark of $10 and $30 for stay quality and difference is huge. my clients from Indonesia came to delhi and commented our uber cabs stink like anything.
— Sameer Singh (@_st_101) December 19, 2024
Hard agree. SE Asia is decades ahead. We’ve failed on every count – difficult to do business with, expensive as hell and poor tourist experiences. It’s generally beyond saving.

Completely echo the sentiments. Domestic tourism in India has gone downhill in past 3 years. It is much pleasant and comfortable to do an international trip in the same budget.
I think the biggest failure of current Modi government will be not fixing the North Indian pollution…

Was in Mahabs last month. Did the whole touristy thing. Absolutely astonished at the upkeep of heritage property.
It’s one of the must do places. And got a face list for G20. But it’s being let go. Just cannot understand why.

Was at Kathmandu, Nepal, on the eve of Dussera (Dashein as they call it), walked around through smaller by lanes, malls as well as usual western hubs like Thamel. Millions of locals out there for their shopping. I did not see a single street with Guthka spit, or public defecation…

I completely agree.
I’m visiting after 3 decades and realize I made a mistake coming here. I’ve decided to avoid doing the golden triangle.
Will end up spending quarter of money I intended to spend.
Hope, it truly improves like other destinations.

Absolutely well put. As an avid overlander, I have seen these instances all over india. Travel and tourism in India lacks value for money and is exasperating in most interfaces with the people for the visitor. Our lack of cleanliness, bad civic infra and greed has to change. I…

Having traveled and worked across India as a nomad, one thing I’ve observed is that our country has become an overpriced mess, which serves more as a deterrent than an attraction in every tourist destination.

Such a large domestic market has no options within a 3 hour radius, so demand will always outstrip supply. As far as international tourism is concerned, filth, safety and pollution are deep rooted issues that are not getting fixed anytime soon.
