In a world where progress and advancement have become the driving forces of modern society, India emerges as a rising star in the global arena of innovation. Like a phoenix ascending from the ashes of its past, India has defied expectations, maintaining its 40th rank in the latest Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023, as released by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). This unrelenting climb from the 81st spot it occupied in 2015 showcases a remarkable tale of transformation and resilience.
India Maintained 40th Position In The Global Innovation Index 2023
Hindustan Times reports, India not only secured the top spot among the 37 lower-middle-income countries but also emerged as the leader among the 10 economies in Central and South America. This consistent rise in the GII rankings showcases India’s commitment to fostering innovation. The GII report highlights several key achievements for India, including its impressive performance in critical indicators such as ICT services exports (5th place), graduates in science and engineering (11th place), venture capital received (6th place), and global corporate research and development (R&D) investors (13th place).
The GII serves as a valuable tool for governments worldwide to evaluate the progress of innovation-driven socioeconomic changes within their nations. As per the reports from Hindustan Times, India’s continued improvement in the GII rankings can be attributed to its abundant knowledge capital, a thriving startup ecosystem, and the commendable efforts of both public and private research organisations. In particular, innovation played a pivotal role in India’s response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also remain crucial for the country’s resilience, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of “Atma Nirbhar Bharat”, or self-reliant India.
